Amazon Quick Sight layer maps now accept Point and LineString geometry from the same GeoJSON workflow, letting users plot individual locations and routes on top of custom shape layers.
- Layer maps previously handled only uploaded GeoJSON shapes such as sales territories and districts, which covered regions and boundaries but not the individual sites inside them or the paths between them.
- Points mark specific locations like store or facility sites, while a LineString traces a route such as a delivery path or a flight between airports.
- A layer map draws its shapes from a GeoJSON file and its metrics from a Quick Sight dataset, joined by a shared key whose values must match even when field names differ.
- Each layer renders one geometry type at a time, so a file mixing types shows only the selected type, and the GeoJSON file must be saved in .geojson format with a maximum supported size of 100 MB.
- The post walks through the dataset and GeoJSON structure layer maps require, when to choose points or lines, and techniques for controlling the viewport, layering geometries and updating GeoJSON files programmatically.
