OpenAI built Pando, a new backend for Git repositories, to scale its monorepo to the concurrent work Codex makes possible, and Pando now powers all development in that monorepo.
- The company says it made the change without interrupting engineering work or changing how its team uses Git, keeping compatibility with the Git protocol and client so engineers and agents could adopt it in existing workflows.
- Pando targets two goals: horizontally scalable writes for concurrent pushes to many branches, and read throughput high enough to saturate a client's network bandwidth.
- It coordinates updates to each branch independently, so unrelated branches proceed in parallel, and reuses packfiles across fetches instead of generating one per client, which can send some objects a client already has.
- OpenAI says Pando cut median push latency by nearly 5x in production and now delivers nearly a petabyte of Git data per day.
- The work follows a period when the systems supporting the monorepo struggled, with slow fetches and pushes, failed merges and reliability at times below 90%.
- OpenAI says it will keep contributing its Git improvements upstream to support agent-scale work.
