Elon Musk says SpaceX cut Grok Bot's weekly usage allowances because serving the AI agent cost more than it earned.
- Musk wrote on X on Sunday that the cost was "unsustainably high relative to revenue," after users complained their weekly allowances ran out faster than usual.
- Grok Bot launched in August as an agent that uses a virtual computer to do tasks like shopping, and its tiers run from free to $200 a month.
- Every tier carries usage limits that refresh weekly, a tactic SpaceX and other agent makers use to stop users running up large AI bills.
- Musk called reducing allowances and telling users about it "just being sensible," and asked one user whether the cost of upgrading to a higher usage plan was too high.
- SpaceX reported 800,000 paid weekly users last month, and Musk told investors the agent had "the fastest growth of a product that I've ever seen in my life."
- SpaceX also plans to fold Grok Bot into an $8-a-month X subscription with X premium and
Cursor, and Musk said in October the agent would use models beyond Grok, including Claude Opus 5.5,
MidJourney and
Suno.
