Ai2 and University of Pennsylvania collaborators built LitPivot, a system that helps researchers revise early-stage research ideas against the literature they will be judged by.
- The work names the problem it addresses a literature-initiated pivot: a change in research direction prompted by reading prior work, which an analysis of meeting notes from four completed computer science projects found 21 times.
- LitPivot splits a proposal into a problem, a contribution and an evaluation plan, then groups papers retrieved through Asta Paper Finder around whichever facet is being edited.
- Researchers select papers, request an assessment, and get a suggested rewrite with supporting excerpts they can accept, edit or reject; the literature is reranked as the facet changes.
- In a study with 17 researchers, domain experts rated ideas developed with LitPivot as better grounded in the literature than those developed with a text editor and an AI chat tool, and participants reported a stronger understanding of the surrounding literature.
- LitPivot will be presented at UIST 2026 in Detroit.
