Amp changed the default model in the Dial from Claude Opus 4.8 to GPT-5.6 (Sol) and observed that most users accepted the switch without complaint, and that model-level preferences no longer measurably affected single-task outcomes.

we changed the default model. Before the Dial, Amp's default mode was smart , running Claude Opus 4.8 and carrying more than half of all new threads. The Dial made medium the default, and medium runs GPT-5.6 Sol.
