OpenAI has appointed Dan Driscoll, the 26th Secretary of the Army, as Senior Counselor for National Security Modernization, a newly created role advising on how advanced AI can strengthen national and cyber security.
- He will work with OpenAI teams and leaders across governments, industry, academia and allied institutions on practical modernization initiatives that support the buildout of democratic AI, and will help internal teams understand the operational needs of global national security institutions.
- Driscoll previously oversaw operations, modernization and resources for nearly one million Active, Guard and Reserve Soldiers and more than 265,000 Army Civilians, and he brings experience spanning military service, senior government leadership and the private sector.
- In the role he will advise public and private sector partners on modernizing policy and strategy choices, and will work to identify where operational needs, institutional change and emerging AI capabilities come together.
- OpenAI says the appointment reflects its commitment to helping democratic institutions use advanced AI responsibly and builds on its work with allies under its Daybreak program.
- Driscoll said national security requirements are changing faster than at any time in the past fifty years, and that the technology will help by cutting through paperwork, making sense of more information and getting the right answer to the right person faster.
