Microsoft Research built the Industry Evaluation Data Generation Platform, a system of full-scale synthetic enterprise environments for evaluating
Microsoft Copilot without using customer data.
- Real enterprise data contains sensitive information that cannot be used for evaluation under any circumstances, so the platform generates simulated tenants with realistic users, meetings, emails, documents and organizational structures.
- The environments are grounded in publicly available sources including O*NET occupational data, online job postings and SEC filings, all reviewed and approved by Microsoft's legal and policy organization.
- Microsoft says the synthetic environments mimic real business workflows and help it find issues that generic benchmarks would miss, and that every environment is fully synthetic with automated content-safety checks.
- The company generated three industry environments: a pharmaceutical setting with regulatory submission and clinical trial workflows, a capital markets setting with deal pipelines and portfolio reviews, and an IT/software company simulating sprint planning and code review.
