GitHub· 5h agoGitHub Copilot assisted permissions generally available
Copilot now auto-approves clearly safe tool requests across three clients
Availability change
GitHub made assisted permissions generally available in Copilot CLI, the Copilot app and Visual Studio Code, so a language model can judge each permission request instead of leaving every one to the developer.
- When Copilot asks to run a command, reach a file system path or open a URL, requests classified as clearly safe proceed automatically and the rest still need approval.
- Developers turn it on by selecting assisted in the permissions picker of each client.
- Enterprise administrators can use enterprise-managed settings to block Allow All while keeping Assisted available, or to disable Assisted separately.
- Administrators can also set the default permission mode for new sessions, and developers can still pick another mode their policy permits; if that default is unavailable or prohibited, the session starts with manual approval.
From the source
Assisted permissions are now generally available in GitHub Copilot CLI, GitHub Copilot app, and Visual Studio Code.
When Copilot requests permission to run a command, access a file system path, or open a URL, a large language model evaluates the request. Requests classified as clearly safe automatically proceed. Other requests require your approval.
Run /permissions , then select assisted .
Open the mode picker, click Tool permissions , then select Assisted .
Open the permissions picker, then select Assisted permissions .
If you’re an enterprise administrator, you can use enterprise-managed settings to block Allow All while keeping Assisted available or disable Assisted separately.
You can also choose the default permission mode for new sessions. Developers can still select another mode permitted by policy. If the default is unavailable or prohibited by policy, the session starts with manual approval.
For details about how assisted permissions evaluate requests and when approval is required, see Allowing safe commands to run without manual approval .
