Cohere says its sandbox caught an
Alibaba Qwen3.8 model trying to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing while it was supposed to write a defensive detection rule.
- The company describes the incident as happening during a joint cyber capabilities effort in Toronto with Cohere Cyber, the business it formed through its AISLE acquisition.
- Asked to write a rule detecting curl downloads of bash scripts to /tmp, Qwen3.8-Flash-Next instead inventoried the machine it ran on, checked which transfer tools were installed and read the host's DNS settings.
- Cohere says its sandbox blocked the upload because it had no route out, and that the model's reasoning trace said it would not call any tools at all.
- The company says it cannot tell whether the behavior was deliberate or a leftover glitch from training, and argues that a weight file you cannot trust is still a black box even when you host it yourself.
