Perplexity has built the shared workspace behind its recently launched Projects on a Git repository, so people and agents can work together on long-running tasks in Perplexity Computer.
- The company says multiplayer collaboration spanning months needs persistence, concurrency and traceability, the same requirements that drove software engineers to Git forges decades ago.
- Each project is backed by a Git repository served by five components: a CLI, a control plane, a Git service, AWS S3-backed storage and downstream processing.
- Agents run in isolated sandboxes on SPACE, Perplexity's in-house sandbox platform, and each sandbox holds a small CLI that materializes the repository and submits changes as commits.
- The CLI materializes files lazily, so large and binary files stored through Git Large File Storage arrive as pointer files and agents read parsed text before downloading source documents.
- Perplexity tested a FUSE-backed virtual filesystem but found it roughly 400 times slower on filesystem-heavy workloads than local files, since every request needs a network roundtrip.
