Replit separates control and data planes for global infrastructure
Replit completed the first milestone of geo-distributing its infrastructure by implementing a control/data plane separation.
The new central Control Plane uses PostgreSQL instead of Redis, enabling consistent state management and reducing latency for users outside the United States.
This change unlocks future functionality that was impossible with the old system.
From the source
With the central Control Plane, we are now able to co-locate it with the data storage (which we have chosen to be PostgreSQL). This way we can build higher level operations that mutate the state of several aspects of a Repl at once in a single network roundtrip to the Control Plane service.
