OpenAI banned two covert influence operations from Russia and Iran that used ChatGPT to support false-front entities, including a fake think tank and journalist personas, to launder geopolitical messaging into target audiences.
The Russian operation reached Category 5 on the IO Breakout Scale, the highest level OpenAI has disrupted, while the Iranian operation reached Category 4.
Both operations managed to land content in mainstream media outlets.
