OpenAI is cartoonifying election-related images in ChatGPT to make it harder for bad actors to create realistic political deepfakes, while preserving room for illustrations and social commentary.
OpenAI said it would stylize images containing election interference or content meant to discourage voting, producing them in a cartoon style rather than photorealistic, to reduce the risk that an imagined scene is mistaken for documentary evidence.
Josh Lawson, OpenAI’s head of elections, told CNET the goal is to degrade the evidentiary value of an image while preserving room for illustrations and social commentary, saying the problem with deepfakes is deception, not social commentary.
A report from the Brennan Center for Justice said OpenAI had significantly improved its protections against election disinformation, while Google Gemini and Meta AI made it easier to create convincing fakes, according to Gizmodo.
