Authentic Brands Group and other rights holders sued Anthropic on Friday, alleging it used 274 Elvis Presley songs to train Claude and generated infringing lyrics.
The lawsuit claims Anthropic has built its entire business model on copyright infringement at an unfathomable scale, pointing to mass scraping of internet content and pirating of books to develop Claude.
The plaintiffs are seeking a permanent injunction to prevent Anthropic from using Presley's songs, as well as damages of up to $150,000 for each work allegedly infringed upon, totaling up to $41.1 million.
The lawsuit alleges that Claude's generated content adapts or copies Presley's discography without appropriate licensing, and describes instances where users could request Claude recreate and update Presley's songs.
The lawsuit claims Anthropic's Claude model has created infringing output of copyrighted material from virtually every song available on the internet, and that guardrails implemented after being caught were ineffective.
