Adapting liability rules to the digital age, the circular economy and global value chains - the new Product Liability Directive
European Commission
Official summary
Investment in and societal acceptance of emerging technologies require legal certainty and trust. The new Product Liability Directive revamps the current rules, based on the strict liability of manufacturers, for the compensation of personal injury, damage to property or data loss caused by any unsafe product, from garden chairs to advanced machinery, software and AI-systems. It ensures fair and predictable rules for businesses and consumers alike by modernising and adapting liability rules for products in the digital age and for circular economy business models, while at the same time putting consumers on an equal footing with manufacturers.
