OpenAI plans to acquire Pierre Computer, a low-profile developer tooling startup whose open-source libraries Trees and Diffs already underpin the interface of OpenAI's Codex programming tool.
- The terms of the deal were not disclosed, and observers pegged it as a shot at
Microsoft's open-source software repository
GitHub.
- Pierre runs a cloud service that AI agents use to store the code they generate, along with related files such as software licenses and interface design elements; Pierre says it helped AI startup
Lovable cut code retrieval latency by about 70%.
- Trees equips a folder navigation sidebar with search, drag-and-drop controls and flags recently added or updated files, while Diffs shows the specific lines that changed, either in a separate section or in-line.
- OpenAI will keep offering Trees and Diffs under an open-source license after the acquisition closes, and plans to fold Pierre's paid code hosting service into Codex.
- The Pierre team will help OpenAI "ship new products and platforms", with an emphasis on optimizing coding agents and streamlining agent workflows that involve Git, which Trees, Diffs and the paid storage service all support.
