OpenAI will acquire Pierre Computer, the developer-tools startup behind Code Storage, and plans to fold that storage product into Codex, according to Axios.
- OpenAI says Codex let engineers work in more parallel branches, pushes and merges, and its earlier monorepo systems saw slow fetches, failed merges and reliability that sometimes fell below 90%.
- Pierre describes Code Storage as a distributed system built on Git, with API ergonomics made for machines, able to hold generated code, agent memory files, design artifacts and legal documents.
- The product exposes Git clone, push and fetch endpoints inside customers' own products, offers TypeScript, Python and Go SDKs, supports webhooks, and synchronizes with
GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket.
- Pierre says Code Storage uses Git's three-phase commit protocol and a quorum-based architecture; its published specifications include 30 or more concurrent writes, repositories as large as 32TB and Git LFS support.
- OpenAI's Pando backend keeps Git protocol and client compatibility, and OpenAI reports it cut median push latency by nearly 80% while serving nearly a petabyte of Git data per day.
- Pierre's open-source projects will remain open source after the acquisition, and OpenAI says it is exploring ways to make Pando's technology available to users.
