OpenAI announced a Community Safety Report on violence prevention, to be updated every six months, alongside tighter limits on weapons-related information for teens and on how ChatGPT answers questions about past mass attacks.
- The company said it made more than 200 law enforcement referrals in the third quarter of 2026, and that it relies on mental health and behavioral experts to assess difficult cases.
- The first report is planned for early 2027, covering the second half of 2026, and will explain how OpenAI trains its systems to detect, investigate and respond to community safety issues, with anonymized examples and supporting data.
- ChatGPT will give less detailed information about past mass attacks, including reconstructions of the weapons and equipment used and how they were obtained, and the limits apply regardless of a user's age or reason for asking.
- When recent chats show warning signs of possible violence, ChatGPT will respond more conservatively, and OpenAI is working to apply those stricter limits when it predicts someone is under 18 even without signs of violent intent.
- ChatGPT for Teens faces further restrictions on practical weapons and security-system information, and OpenAI said the safeguards will begin rolling out in the next few weeks.
