OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a startup whose AI agents help pharmaceutical companies manage drug development, and will fold its team and technology into Rosalind, OpenAI's suite of AI models and tools for life sciences researchers.
- Orchestra's platform lets scientists delegate tasks such as monitoring studies, tracking drug development timelines and spotting potential delays to AI agents, and both companies want agents that connect scientific findings to the decisions needed to advance treatments.
- Financial terms were not disclosed.
- The deal extends a push by OpenAI and
Anthropic into science beyond coding and cybersecurity, and follows Anthropic's roughly $400 million April acquisition of AI biotech startup Coefficient Bio, according to The Information.
- OpenAI introduced its specialized GPT-Rosalind model in April for biology, chemistry and drug discovery, and has partnered with Novo Nordisk and Moderna on research and development workflows.
- OpenAI says developing a new medicine typically takes 10 to 15 years, a timeline it hopes AI can shorten.
