Perplexity has open-sourced SPACE, the in-house sandbox platform behind its Computer personal agent, publishing the code on GitHub under the Apache License 2.0.
- Perplexity launched Computer in February using a commercial sandbox provider, then replaced it in July with SPACE, which it says has powered all Computer sessions since and handled millions of sandbox creations per day."In a company comparison on the same production traffic, sandbox creation was three to five times faster than with the previous provider," Perplexity reported.
- The company says it released SPACE to give developers a production-tested foundation for agent runtimes, with isolation, state recovery, and credential and network controls built in.
- Each sandbox runs inside its own virtual machine, with a central control plane coordinating lifecycle operations and credentials held outside the sandbox.
- Perplexity's security evaluation recorded no escape from the virtual machine to the host in 108 attempts; some attempts bypassed network restrictions, which the company says it fixed and that neither attack method worked in follow-up testing.
- SPACE is implemented in Rust and reached through HTTP and server-sent events, with an E2B compatibility wrapper, a local Kind cluster setup, hosted documentation, and an API reference.
- Perplexity says CoreWeave and Akamai have tested and launched SPACE on their clouds and Crusoe is partnering to bring it to its Managed AI Services portfolio.
