Forecasting the future of forests with AI: From counting losses to predicting risk

Google Research announces ForestCast, a deep learning model for forecasting deforestation risk using pure satellite data, and releases a public benchmark dataset for training such models. The model uses vision transformers and achieves accuracy comparable to or better than methods relying on specialized input maps.
