Protecting cities with AI-driven flash flood forecasting

Google Research announces the roll-out of Urban Flash Flood forecasts on Flood Hub, using a new AI-powered methodology that provides up to 24 hours advance notice for flash floods in urban areas. The system leverages a novel training method called Groundsource, which uses Gemini to extract ground truth from news reports, and relies on global weather products and forecasts.

today we’re announcing the roll-out of Urban Flash Flood forecasts on Flood Hub. By leveraging a new AI-powered methodology, we can now predict the risk of flash floods in urban areas up to 24 hours in advance.
