OpenAI bans accounts used in Cambodia-based romance scam targeting Indonesians

OpenAI banned a cluster of ChatGPT accounts and one API customer that very likely originated in Cambodia and used AI to run a semi-automated romance and task scam targeting Indonesian loveseekers.

The operation used ChatGPT to generate promotional texts, pose as a flirtatious receptionist, translate messages, and create fake dating platforms.

OpenAI states its policies strictly prohibit use of its tools for fraud or scams.

We banned a cluster of ChatGPT accounts and one API customer that were using our models to run a semi-automated romance and task scam likely defrauding hundreds of victims a month.
