Children's hospital models hearts in seconds using open source NVIDIA AI tools
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia uses open source AI tools built on MONAI and NVIDIA frameworks to create anatomically precise 3D cardiac models from medical imaging in seconds, enabling safer surgical planning for children with congenital heart disease.
The workflow, which previously required four hours of manual work, now supports routine clinical use across more than 20 children's hospitals in the U.S., with Boston Children's Hospital applying modeling to over 500 cardiac surgeries annually.

CHOP's cardiac modeling service, built on MONAI — an open source medical imaging framework cofounded by NVIDIA — takes the images a child's care team already has, such as CT scans, MRI and 3D ultrasound, and produces anatomically precise heart models in just seconds. A workflow that once required four hours of work by a skilled researcher now completes fast enough for routine clinical use.
