Cult.fit is using OpenAI's Codex across engineering and non-engineering teams to build internal tools, cut software costs and speed up development. The Indian fitness chain, which runs 708 fitness centers in 77 cities and serves nearly one million paid members, standardized its software development lifecycle on Codex after developers had been using a mix of coding agents and assistants. CTO Santhosh Kumar says the company wanted to become "more AI-native in the way we run things," and that standardizing on Codex let it build its development lifecycle around a single platform. Specialized agents now handle site reliability, security and on-call work, and one social feed for the cult.fit app that Kumar estimates would have taken more than a year was built and shipped in two months. Codex has since spread beyond engineering: more than 20 internal applications have been built by non-engineering teams in recent months, and one engineer rebuilt an internal dashboard over a weekend, avoiding more than $100,000 in annual software costs. Cult.fit is also using the OpenAI API for its AI Trainer, which around 20% of its gym users use; the latest version is voice-first and uses GPT Realtime for coaching cues and workout logging.
