Meta is backing university research at five institutions, giving them access to its models to help advance breakthroughs across science and medicine. The company says the researchers will get its latest Muse models, including Muse Wonder and Muse Spark, along with open-weight models such as Muse Glimmer and Muse Spark Open. Computer vision models SAM, V-JEPA and DINO are also part of the support, as is SeamlessM4T, Meta's multilingual communication model. Caltech expands an existing partnership with Meta to test whether large language models can speed up research in mathematics and physical sciences. Ohio State's medical school is developing AI workflows to help radiologists screen X-rays, tools for earlier heart failure detection, and clinician-guided tools for Alzheimer's diagnosis. LSU is applying AI to non-contact infant tracheostomy monitoring, neurosurgical outcomes and VR training for medical professionals, while Indiana University is using open-weight models to improve maternal-newborn care and learning with tools that work on limited connectivity. UTHealth Houston is using Muse Glimmer, one of Meta's smallest open-weight models, for brain cancer treatment projects and agentic benchmarking in healthcare.
