Meta is partnering with five US universities and granting $2 million to support research that uses its models in medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science and mathematics. The schools are the California Institute of Technology, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Louisiana State University, Indiana University and UTHealth Houston. Meta says the funding backs work that uses its models to accelerate breakthroughs, and it is also bringing direct researcher collaboration to academia. In medicine, researchers will use Meta's models, glasses and mixed reality headsets to address gaps in healthcare. Dr. Michael Dunham at Louisiana State University leads the Eyes-On project, a computer vision system that continuously detects tracheostomy tube displacement and signs of distress in infants who cannot reliably vocalize. The system explores Meta's open weight SAM models for tracking and is meant to work with bedside cameras and edge computing; a proof-of-concept has been published. Dr. David Crandall at Indiana University is developing multimodal AI methods to analyze conversations involving older adults with dementia and help conversational agents, including social robots, adapt to individual users. At Ohio State, Dr. Yuan Xue leads a project with Dr. Yuchi Han and Dr. Xia Ning investigating how Meta's open-weight models can predict future HFpEF risk from routine abdominal CT scans, longitudinal medical records and ECG data when available.
