Microsoft Research has introduced Flint-interactive, a language that lets AI agents and developers build interactive data visualizations on top of Flint, so readers can click, filter, zoom and highlight charts rather than view static images. The work answers a practical gap: even capable frontier models rarely produce a satisfactory interactive chart in one turn, and repeated rounds of reasoning, coding and debugging consume tokens and time while expressive charts easily break. Flint-interactive leans on Flint's compiler, which turns raw triggers such as clicks, drags and key presses into semantic events that identify chart elements and data, then applies high-level operators to update the visualization. Users specify interaction logic by mapping those semantic events to update operators like set style, set annotation and set viewport, while the compiler handles hit testing and low-level rendering. It can be used in chat or a canvas through Flint-MCP and MCP Apps, embedded in dashboards and data stories via Flint Interactive Canvas, or extended with custom handle functions for bespoke interactions. Microsoft says the separation of visual and interaction logic means users do not need to reverse-engineer rendering logic or manipulate renderer-specific marks.

## Evidence

Verbatim from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/blog/flint-interactive-a-language-for-creating-interactive-data-visualizations/:

> Flint-interactive (opens in new tab) is a language for creating interactive data visualizations on top of Flint. It allows users to create dashboards, data stories, and interactive artifacts more easily.
