Anthropic says it will commit 5% of its shares to a fund for the "public good", worth around $48bn at its May valuation, as the Claude developer prepares to list on the stock market. The commitment is subject to shareholder approval, and Anthropic will add a further 2% of its stock for every 50% increase in its value above an undisclosed baseline. The company says the fund will let it "explore large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations". Anthropic wrote that AI "may generate enormous economic value, but it could also cause instability for many workers", and said its existing $200m commitment may not be enough given the pace of progress. Anthropic was valued at $965bn in May when it raised $65bn, and is reportedly weighing a $1.5tn valuation for an IPO planned for November. Elon Musk responded on social media by pledging to give away some of his own shares, saying he would give one SpaceX share to every child in America next year.
