Microsoft Research introduced StudentSim, a system that creates personalized AI student simulators from de-identified learner records to evaluate and improve AI tutors before human testing. The system is evaluated across chess, second-language English writing, and mathematics using a new benchmark called StudentSimEval. StudentSim is a research system, not a product, and is not intended to replace teachers.

## Evidence

Verbatim from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/blog/simulating-student-learning-for-better-ai-tutoring/:

> StudentSim is an AI system that creates personalized simulators of individual students, modeling how they answer questions and how their answers change after receiving a tutor's guidance. The goal is to make student feedback more available during AI tutor development.
