- Subject: Reporting

Google launched a web-based SynthID Detector that anyone can use to identify AI-generated or AI-edited images, video and audio from Google, OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao, with Apple support coming in weeks. The tool relies on SynthID watermarks, so it cannot detect content from models that do not use SynthID, such as Anthropic's Claude or xAI's Grok, and it cannot distinguish fully AI-generated content from AI-edited material.

## Evidence

Verbatim from https://siliconangle.com/2026/10/07/google-debuts-synthid-detector-tool-for-flagging-ai-generated-content-but-its-far-from-perfect/:

> The downside to SynthID Detector is that it has, well, downsides. For instance, because it's designed to identify the hidden SynthID watermarks in AI content, it's not very good at detecting AI-generated content that doesn't have a SynthID watermark.
